“Of Dogs, Cats, Mice, And Men”

Why do dogs chase cats, cats chase mice, and rats hang out in the sewer?  Why do men and women, boys and girls behave as they do?  Behavioral scientists, psychologists, psychiatrists and many others have come up with all kinds of theories in an effort to modify undesirable behavior and establish acceptable “normal” behavior, whatever that means.

Evolution.  Common sense would tell us that our world isn’t getting better or safer.  Crime is on the rise.  Criminals are being released from prisons because of over crowding.  Lawlessness and anarchy are the characteristics of our day.  Government is grabbing more and more power.  People wanted “change.”  We got it.  But is it change for the better or for the worse?  What should you expect to happen in the future?  Have any reliable predictions been made?  If so, by whom?

Complexity. Looking down on earth from space, we realize that we live on a beautiful blue planet.  But the creatures on earth are in trouble and have been in trouble for a very long time.  What can/should be done to change the course of man’s future for the better?

Road Map.  Is there a “road map” for man to study or someone to lead the way to a better life?  Yes!  We believe there are solutions to the challenges we face and a person who has our best interests in mind whom we should follow.  But many have chosen to reject Him,  or ignore Him and the instruction manual that He gave to us.  Many people in other countries don’t even know that there is such a manual.

Natural Revelation.  But all men have natural revelation available to them.  They can know by observing nature that there must be a designer God who is powerful (Romans 1:20).  God has the ability to get additional information to them concerning His plan of salvation if they will respond positively toward Him.  But “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God” (Psalm 9:17).  Is our nation in trouble?  Are we committing suicide?  Is our current life style about to change dramatically?  If so, how soon?  Let me get personal.  Have you been ignoring God?  Where will you spend eternity?  Are you sure?

Mystery?  It’s not too hard to discover why man is facing the problems he is today.  It goes back about 6,000 years when our first parents, Adam and Eve, followed the advice of God’s adversary the devil (Lucifer).  He spoke the truth when he told them that they would become like God, in one area, if they ate the forbidden fruit.  But he lied to them when he told them that they wouldn’t die if they ate it (Genesis 3).

Change.  Upon eating the forbidden fruit, man’s nature was changed and he too became a rebel against God like the devil.  This fallen nature led their son Cain to kill his brother Abel (Genesis 4).  Satan immediately realized that he had a big problem.  If mankind kept killing others indiscriminately he wouldn’t have any humans being over whom he could rule.

System.  During the days of Cain the devil developed a system to try to control the debased nature of man (Isaiah 64:6; Romans 3:10-23).  He wanted and still wants to establish a counterfeit kingdom like Christ’s that will include men and women who are like himself (Colossians 1:13).  He wants mankind to be able to have the “good life” without God and His laws.  This system includes urbanization, and human government that is designed to make man dependent on it rather than on God.  Commerce, entertainment, education, industry, and senseless warfare are also a part of this diabolical system (Genesis 4:16-24).

Counterfeit.  Satan will set up his counterfeit kingdom on this earth (2 Thessalonians 2:1-12; Revelation 13:1-18) just before Jesus establishes His millennial kingdom on earth (Daniel 2:44, 45; 7:24-27; Revelation 20:1-7).  Satan’s universal kingdom will last only seven years (Daniel 9:27).  It may be here a lot sooner than you realize.  The stage seems to be set and the actors seem to be in place for this to happen.  Where will you be when all this takes place?

Cosmos.  “It refers to the order or arrangement under which Satan has organized the world of unbelieving mankind upon his cosmic principles of force, greed, selfishness, ambition, and pleasure.  The world system is imposing and powerful with military might; is often outwardly religious, scientific, cultured, and elegant; but, seething with national and commercial rivalries and ambitions, is upheld in any real crisis only by armed force, and is dominated by satanic principles.” – Dr. C. I. Scofield

Depravity.  The natural man, as he is born into this world, has the devil for his father (1 John 3:10; John 8:44).  He needs to be “born again from above” if he wants God to be his Father and if he wants to go to heaven and avoid spending eternity with the devil and his demons (John 3:6; Matthew 25:41, 46).  The natural, unsaved man has a nature that twists and perverts good things into sinful behavior.

Perversions. “Immorality, impurity, licentiousness are perversions of the sexual instinct which is in itself a lovely thing and part of love.  Idolatry is a perversion of worship and was an aid to worship.  Sorcery is a perversion of the use of the healing drugs in medicine.  Envy, jealousy, and strife are perversions of the noble ambition and desire to do well which can spur to greatness.  Enmity and anger are the perversion of that righteous indignation without which the passion for good cannot exist.  Dissension and the party spirit are a perversion of the devotion to the principle which can produce the martyr.  Drunkenness and carousing are the perversion of the happy joy of social fellowship and of the things which men can happily and legitimately enjoy.  Beauty is turned to ugliness.  Sin takes the raw material of potential goodness and turns it into the material of evil.” – William Barclay

New Nature.  When a person places his faith exclusively in the Lord Jesus Christ, who died for his sins…and who rose again bodily from the tomb on the third day, he becomes a child of God and a partaker of a new nature from God (2 Peter 1:4).  Our salvation is by God’s grace (unmerited favor) through faith alone, in Christ alone.  It is not gained by our good works lest anyone should boast (Ephesians 2:8, 9).  This new nature enables the believer to do things that please God (Colossians 1:10; 2 Corinthians 5:9).  But it must be empowered by God the Holy Spirit or it will be defeated by the old sinful nature that continues to reside in the believer until he is taken to heaven (Romans 7:15-25; Galatians 5:16).

Natural Man.  Perhaps even without his knowing it, the natural, unsaved man’s life is regulated by the devil (Ephesians 2:2), his own sinful nature (Romans 6:16), and/or the diabolical world system (1 John 2:15-17).  He may think that he is the “captain of his own ship and the master of his own fate” but he is deluded (2 Corinthians 4:4). We become the slaves of the one to whom we present ourselves to obey (John 8:34).  What passions regulate your life?

Victory.  Christians can/should live victoriously over all three spiritual enemies that would seek to enslave us.  Each enemy uses different methods to entice us into grabbing the bait and getting us hooked (James 1:13-15).  What seemed so enticing at first ends up eventually in misery and death (Proverbs 14:12; Romans 6:23).  But God has made a way of escape for those who want to be freed from our enemies’ cruel clutches (1 Corinthians 10:13).  He is in the business of setting captives free (John 8:36).
