“Walking On Water?”

Miracles. Signs, wonders, and mighty deeds. Who wouldn’t be interested in being around someone who could perform miracles that would be beneficial to ourselves and others? The Jews of Christ’s day certainly were amazed and followed Him. Had we been there, I’m sure that we would have liked to see Him do such things for us and our loved ones who were sick, diseased, crippled, and/or demon possessed.

B.T.W.  Did you know that while a Christian can’t be demon possessed (2 Corinthians 6:14-17), he can be tormented by demons if he has an unforgiving or bitter spirit or other unconfessed sins in his life (Matthew 18:34; 2 Timothy 2:26; Hebrews 12:15)? This may be just one way God chastens His rebellious children whom He loves (1 Corinthians 11:30; Hebrews 12:5ff). What do you know about the sin unto death (1 John 5:16; James 5:19, 20)?

Loaves/Fishes. Having just seen Jesus perform the miracle of feeding five thousand men plus women and children (Matthew 14:21) from five loaves and two small fish, the crowd wanted more from this miracle worker. In fact, they wanted to make Him their King (John 6:15). But surprisingly, He didn’t let that happen. Do you know why He turned down their offer? Do you ever sing songs in church that talk about our crowning Jesus as the King? Had Jesus allowed them to make Him their King, they would have had control over Him. But this was/is not according to God’s plan or timing (Psalm 2). God the Father won’t cause Jesus to rule as the King of kings and Lord of lords (Revelation 19:16) until the Jews have repented (i.e., changed their minds about the Lord Jesus Christ). He is the Lord (God), Jesus (Savior), Christ (Messiah, the resurrected and glorified One).

Remnant. When the Jews are about to be annihilated at Armageddon at the end of the Tribulation, the believing remnant will acknowledge Jesus to be their True Messiah and the God-man as it was predicted in the Old Testament (Zechariah 12:10; Matthew 23:39; John 1:1-18). For a Jew to be saved today, he must believe in the Deity of Jesus and His bodily resurrection which implies that Christ died for his sins too (Romans 10:9).  Jews must be saved the same way that non-Jews are saved by believing the same Gospel (Romans 1:16, 17; 1 Corinthians 15:3, 4). They aren’t saved by a separate covenant as is falsely being taught. Eventually everyone, believers and unbelievers will admit that Jesus is the Lord (i.e., God-man) to the glory of God the Father (Philippians 2:9-11). However, this doesn’t mean that everyone, including the devil and demons, will be saved eventually because God is love and wouldn’t send anyone to hell to suffer forever. If this were true, God’s Word would be a lie because hell is eternal and the devil and his demons and all unbelievers will suffer there forever (Matthew 25:30, 41, 46; Jude 1:13).

The Miracle Workers And Magicians

Imagine. There was no doubt about it. Miraculously Jesus fed a multitude of over 5,000 people by multiplying a boy’s lunch that consisted of five barley loves and two small fish (John 6:9-11). Imagine what it must have been like. Suppose a hamburger shop had 5,000 people come in for just one burger. It might overwhelm the employees in the store and they might not even have enough food to make that many burgers. How long would it have taken to feed such a crowd until they were full and satisfied?

Jesus And His Agents. On another occasion Jesus sent out His twelve disciples and gave them power over unclean spirits and to cast them out of people. They also were enabled to heal all kinds of sick people of their diseases (Matthew10:1). In the early days of the church, some believers were given the supernatural gifts of healing people to authenticate those who brought oral revelation to the new Christians before the New Testament was complete (1 Corinthians 12:28; 13:10). The credentials of a true apostle was his ability to perform three types of miracles: sign miracles, wonder miracles, and mighty deeds miracles (2 Corinthians 12:12). In the Old Testament times Moses performed many miracles before Pharaoh and the Egyptians to prove that the God of the Jews was the only true and living God (Exodus 7:3; 8:19).

Satan And His Agents. The devil is a master counterfeiter and has deceived and is still deceiving many people today through false prophets and teachers who proclaim another gospel and another way of salvation by good works (2 Corinthians 11:4, 13-15). We trust that you aren’t being deceived by them. After Moses had performed a few miracles, Pharaoh’s magicians imitated some of them to try to discredit them through their magic tricks (Exodus 7:22). But when it came to the plague of the lice, they weren’t able to duplicate it and acknowledged that it had to have come from the finger of God (Exodus 8:19).

Judgment Day. On judgment day, many false teachers and preachers who had prophesied in the Lord’s name, who had cast out demons in His name, and who had done many wonders in His name, will hear Jesus say to them, “I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness” (Matthew 7:21-23). Sadly, many believers in Ephesus were involved in magic. But after seeing a demon possessed man overpower the seven sons of Sceva, they burned their magic books that had cost them 50,000 pieces of silver. After they did this the word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed (Acts 19:11-20). If you’re a Christian, what sin in your life may be keeping the Word of God from spreading to others?

Deception. The greatest deception will take place during the days of the seven year Tribulation. It seems to be very near at hand. The Antichrist (Lawless One) will be able to imitate the three kinds of miracles that Christ and His apostles performed (Acts 2:22; 2 Thessalonians 2:7-12). His power will come from the devil (Revelation 13: ). Thankfully his reign will be limited to seven years (Daniel 9:27). Were God to allow it to go on any longer, no one would survive (Matthew 24:22). During this awful time in human history, one half of the population will die (Revelation 6:8; 9:15). You won’t want to be here during the Tribulation. Do you know how you can escape it without dying (1 Corinthians 15:51, 52; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18)? We understand that there are some environmental groups who believe that the population of the world needs to be reduced by 90%. The question is, “Whom do they want to eliminate and how?”

The Water Walkers

Jesus. To the chagrin of the unbelievers, miracles have happened. A miracle is nothing more than the circumvention of the normal laws (phenomenon) of nature. Since Jesus, as the God-man, is the One who established all these laws (Genesis 1:1; John 1:3; Hebrews 1:2), He is free to change them when He wants to do so. By His walking on the water Jesus demonstrated that He was/is the Master over nature itself (John 6:19; See Psalm 65:7; 107:29). Earlier in His ministry He had changed water into wine (John 2:6-11). He also calmed a raging sea with a command (Matthew 8:23-27). Being omnipotent, there is nothing too hard for Him (Revelation 1:8; See Hebrews 7:25).

Peter. Don’t you just love this man? He was vocal, impetuous, and a man of action. Many of us are a lot like him. When he saw Jesus walking on the water on that stormy night, he asked that Jesus grant to him the ability to walk on the water to come out to Him (Matthew 14:28-31). Jesus told him to “Come.” After a short distance Peter took notice of the boisterous wind and waves and began to sink. Some have suggested that his real problem was concerning the true identity of Jesus. Was He just a man, God or the God-man? Later on Peter made this confession, “You are the Christ (Messiah), the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16). This is the confession that a person had to make to be saved prior to Christ’s death for our sins…and His bodily resurrection (See 1 Corinthians 15:3, 4).

The Counterfeit Master

Expelled. During the latter half of the seven years of the Tribulation, when Satan will be kicked out of heaven for good (Revelation 12:9), his man, the Antichrist will attempt to wipe out the Jewish people who will refuse to bow to the image which the false prophet has erected of him (Matthew 24:15; Daniel 9:27). The devil will be enabled to send a flood on the Jews who will be fleeing from Judea to Petra (Sela) in Jordan (Revelation 12:14-17; Isaiah 16:1). But God will cause the earth to open up and swallow the flood that otherwise would have killed all of them.

Indestructible. Folks, the Jewish nation cannot be annihilated in spite of what their enemies vow to do. They are the “salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13) and the reason God preserves this earth. Since Satan hates the Jews, who provided us with the Scriptures and the Savior, he will bring all the nations of the world against Israel in the campaign of the battle of Armageddon (Revelation 16:16). The devastation of those who come against the Jews is almost indescribable (Zechariah 14:12-15; See Genesis 12:1-3).

News Heavens/Earth. When God creates the new heavens and new earth (Revelation 21:1ff), the Jewish believers will inherit the new earth where righteousness will finally settle down and feel at home (Romans 4:13; 2 Peter 3:13). Christians are the inheritors of the New Jerusalem in heaven (Revelation 21:9ff; See John 14:1-3). Will you be in one of these places or with the devil and his angels (demons) in the lake of fire to suffer forever (Matthew 25:30, 42, 46)? What you do with Jesus while you’re alive on earth will determine your future destiny. The choice is yours – accept Him or reject Him (John 1:12).

The Locomotive Engineer

Other Miracles. While most of us would think that walking on the water was quite spectacular, Jesus also performed a couple other miracles at this same time. He caused the winds and the raging sea to die down instantly (Matthew 14:32; Mark 6:51). But He also caused the boat in which His disciples were sitting to be transported immediately to Capernaum, the place for which they originally were headed (John 6:17-21). You see, Jesus is the Master of time and space too. This also relates to the Christian’s hope of instantly being “caught up” (i.e., raptured) to meet the Lord in the air (1 Thessalonians 4:16, 17; 1 Corinthians 15:51-57; John 14:1-3). The same Greek root word is used when the people came to take [Jesus] by force” to make Him their King (John 6:15).

Application. Just as Jesus calmed the raging sea, so He can calm our souls (emotions) so we can enjoy the “peace of God” that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:6, 7; John 14:1-3). The Christians’ souls (emotions) aren’t saved yet but they will be at the Rapture (1 Peter 1:9). Do you know Him as your personal Savior? Would you like to be at “peace with God” (Romans 5:1)? Are you ready for the Lord to return for those who belong to Him or will you be left behind? Would you like to know what kind of bodies we’ll have in eternity (1 John 3:2; 1 Corinthians 15:54-57; Luke 24:33-43)?

Followers

Disciples. To be a disciple in Christ’s day simply meant that a person was a follower of Jesus. It didn’t mean that all of them were saved people. Judas was one of Christ’s twelve disciples but he wasn’t a true believer (John 6:71). There are many people today who say they are followers of Jesus. If you are one of them, why do you follow Him? Is it merely for you to have Him as your personal genie to meet all your personal, physical, and emotional needs? What about your spiritual needs? Have you placed your faith in Him alone to save you from hell and take you to heaven? If not, will you believe on Him as the One who died for your sins…and rose again bodily from the dead on the third day? If you’ve already done this, have you given evidence of your faith by being baptized (immersed)? If not, why?

Motives. They matter greatly. Christians are to judge (weigh) their own and other people’s actions, but not motives (1 Corinthians 5:3; 6:1-8; 11:28-32). “Judge not, that you be not judged,” was written to hypocrites (Matthew 7:1). Without the ability to judge, how would one know what was holy and not holy that shouldn’t be cast to dogs and swine (Matthew 7:6)? Why do you do what you do and say what you say? Why do you attend or fail to attend church? Is it to be blessed and/or to bless others (2 Corinthians 1:3, 4; Hebrews 10:24, 25)? Is it to look for a mate or business contacts? Is it to have your ears tickled (2 Timothy 4:3, 4)? Be honest. What’s is really important to you – God and people or things?

Tested. The Lord will evaluate and expose each one’s works and our true motives on judgment day (1 Corinthians 4:5; 2 Corinthians 5:10). These judgments won’t be to determine if one gets into heaven or not but to determine the degree of pleasure one will enjoy in God’s presence (1 Corinthians 3:11-15) or one’s degree of suffering in the lake of fire forever (Matthew 10:15). Do you know in which judgment you will participate (Hebrews 9:27)? Will your works meet the test of fire (1 Corinthians 3:13-15)? If you’re a Christian, will you receive any crowns, praise, and/or rewards from the Lord or will you meet Him empty handed? Let’s make our choices (big and small) with this in mind.
