“Moment By Moment”

Posted: February 5, 2019 in Songs, Spiritual Enemies

Do you enjoy the old hymns of the faith? I do. Many of them bring great comfort and encouragement to me when the devil tempts me with discouragement, disappointment, and doubt. I know that when this happens, I need to put on the armor of God to counteract his attempts to disrupt my relationship with God (1 Peter 5:8; James 4:7; Ephesians 6:10-17).

When an evil spirit afflicted King Saul, music from David, his son-in-law, had a calming effect on him (1Samuel 16:23). Sadly, in spite of this, King Saul turned on David and tried to kill him (1 Samuel 19:1, 2).

It’s true, we need God’s help “Day By Day,” and “I Need Thee Every Hour.” But there is an even greater need that can be met when we have a “Moment By Moment” relationship with Him and abide (feel at ease) with Him so we can “bear much fruit” (John 15:1-8).

When tempted by our sin nature, it’s important, if we want to have victory over the strong desires that come from within us, that we not only “Walk by means of the Spirit” in an overall sense, but also for us that we “walk each step by means of the Holy Spirit” (Galatians 5:16, 25).

Ira D. Sankey, song leader for D. L. Moody, tells us how the song “Moment By Moment” came about. While I was attending the World’s Fair in Chicago, Henry Varley, a lay preacher from London, said to Major Whittle: “I do not like the hymn ‘I need Thee every hour’ very well, because I need Him every moment of the day.” Soon after Major Whittle wrote this sweet hymn.

Lyrics: Daniel W. Whittle
Music: May W. Moody

Dying with Jesus, by death reckoned mine;
Living with Jesus, a new life divine;
Looking to Jesus till glory doth shine,
Moment by moment, O Lord, I am Thine.

Refrain

Moment by moment I’m kept in His love;
Moment by moment I’ve life from above;
Looking to Jesus till glory doth shine;
Moment by moment, O Lord, I am Thine.

Never a trial that He is not there,
Never a burden that He doth not bear,
Never a sorrow that He doth not share,
Moment by moment, I’m under His care.

Refrain

Never a heartache, and never a groan,
Never a teardrop and never a moan;
Never a danger but there on the throne,
Moment by moment He thinks of His own.

Refrain

Never a weakness that He doth not feel,
Never a sickness that He cannot heal;
Moment by moment, in woe or in weal,

Jesus my Savior, abides with me still.

Refrain

Here is a rendition of this song that you may enjoy.
