“Death & Life”

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

Death is a subject that most people don’t like to discuss, but it’s inevitable. Or is it? “And as it is appointed unto men [and women, boys and girls] once to die, but after this the judgment:” (Hebrews 9:27). The Apostle Paul wrote: “Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep [die], but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed” (1 Corinthians 15:51, 52).

Apocalypse. The “Fourth Horsemen of the Apocalypse is death. It is preceded by a false peace, war, and famine (Revelation 6:1-8). These conditions could be “just around the corner” from where we are today. Is there a way for us to avoid or delay these events from coming?

Approach. In journalistic style, let’s ask Who…? What…? Where…? When…? Why…? How…? Who dies and who lives? What is death? Where does a person go at the time of death? When will a person die? Why death came upon the human race? Can death be reversed?

Death. From the Scriptures we learn that there are three kinds of death. [1] Death isn’t annihilation or reincarnation but separation. Physical death takes place when the soul and spirit depart from the body (2 Corinthians 5:1-8; 1 Thessalonians 5:23; 1 Peter 1:9). It can be and will be reversed by the Lord Jesus Christ sometime in the future (1 Corinthians 15:26, 51, 52). Spiritual death involves an individual’s separation from God which began in the Garden of Eden when Eve and Adam ate the forbidden fruit (Genesis 2:17; 3:1-6). We all were born into this world physically alive but spiritually dead and separated from fellowship with God (Ephesians 2:1). This condition can and will be changed the moment a person believes on the Lord Jesus Christ alone, who died for our sins…and rose again bodily on the third day (Acts 16:31; 1 Corinthians 15:3, 4; John 3:3-8; 1 Peter 1:23; Ephesians 2:1). The Second death takes place at the time of an unbeliever’s physical death (Revelation 20:6, 14; 21:8). It is irreversible. There are no “second chances” to be saved from the eternal lake of fire as some cults and false religions teach. Today, when an unbeliever dies, he/she goes to the lowest section of Sheol/Hades, in the heart of the earth, where they will suffer (Luke 16:19-31; Deuteronomy 32:22). At the time of the Great White Throne Judgment, which takes place at the end of Christ’s millennial reign on/over the earth, they will be raised from the dead, given another kind of body that will suffer forever in the lake of fire that was prepared for the devil and his angels/demons (Matthew 25:30, 41, 46). Their degree of suffering in the lake of fire, will be determined by Christ, the righteous Judge (John 5:22; 2 Timothy 4:8; Revelation 20:11-15). The souls and spirits of true Christians, at the moment of physical death, are transported immediately from this life into God’s presence in the third heaven. Here they are given a temporary body to house their souls and spirits until the time of the Rapture when they will receive their resurrected, glorified bodies that are like Christ’s resurrected, glorified body (2 Corinthians 5:1- 8; 1 John 3:2). We do NOT become gods. At the time of the Rapture, the works of New Testament believers will be evaluated at the Bema Seat Judgment (1 Corinthians 3:11-15) to determine if we will receive crowns, rewards, and praise from Christ (1 Corinthians 3:11-15). It isn’t a time to determine if we get into heaven or not.

Life. God the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, came into this world to glorify God (John 17:4) by making the Godhead known to mankind and to spirit beings whether they be cherubs, seraphs, and angels (Ephesians 3:10). God didn’t offer salvation and deliverance from the lake of fire to the devil and his angels/demons who rebelled against Him. But surprisingly God graciously demonstrated His love for rebellious mankind and provided the means of our salvation and deliverance from the lake of fire. He added to His deity a true human nature and a real body (John 1:14; Philippians 2:5-11).  He lived a sinless life (Hebrews 4:15), and then offered Himself as our Substitute and died in our place for our sins to satisfy (1 John 2:2; 4:10) God’s outraged holiness against our sin nature (Isaiah 53:6; Hebrews 10:10). Had He remained dead, we would have no way knowing if God the Father was satisfied with His payment for our sins (Romans 4:25). But on the third day He arose bodily from the dead, made Himself visible to over 500 witnesses over a forty day period of time before He ascended back to heaven from where He had come (1 Corinthians 15:1 ff; Acts 1:1-11). He promised to come back for His Bride, the true Church (John 14:1-3; Ephesians 5:32). Those who place their faith and trust in Him alone will receive “eternal life” (God’s quality of life) as a present possession (John 3:16, 18, 36; 5:24; 1 John 5:13). Christ came to give us “eternal life” and an “abundant life” (John 10:10).

Response. Merely knowing and believing the facts of the Gospel (1 Corinthians 15:2) isn’t enough to save anyone from having to spend eternity with the devil in the lake of fire forever. We must transfer our faith and trust from ourselves and our good works (Ephesians 2:8, 9; Titus 3:5) over to the Person of Christ, who died for our sins…and rose again bodily from the dead on the third day. Have you done this yet? If not, why not now (Proverbs 27:1; James 4:14)?

Gospel. Dr. Manfred Kober summed up the Gospel with these 24 words: “Friend: You have sinned. But Christ died for sinners and rose again. Trust Him alone and He will save you eternally. Do it now!” [2] Please share this Good News with others as you are led by God the Holy Spirit as He opens up opportunities for you (Romans 8:14).
