“Christian Responsibilities”

Posted: April 15, 2021 in Bible Study, Christian Life, Dispensations

What kind of home life did you have when you were growing up as a child? Was it a happy home or a stress filled home? Were your parents strict or lenient? Who was the dominant parent in your family – your father or your mother? Or did you or your siblings rule the house and do whatever you wanted to do? Did you grow up in a single parent home? Were you an only child or did you have brothers and sisters? What “house rules” did you have? Did you rebel against them? What happened when you disobeyed them and did whatever you wanted to do? Was there any discipline at all and was it consistent?

Imagine, if you can, a small, one story, three bedroom house with 23 people living in it. I knew a Hispanic man who lived in such a house. When we were starting a church out in California, he came to church one day and told me that he enjoyed the service. Then he said, “I want to help you build this church up with people.” I wasn’t exactly sure how he planned to do that.

So the next Sunday he came to church with 22 other members of his family which included his kids and grandchildren. We had quite a crowd that day. My wife took the small children and taught them, and I had the adults as we met in a motel conference room that we had rented.

With so many people living in his house, there had to be some “House Rules” or there would have been total chaos. In like manner, there needs to be “House Rules” in societies and in nations. Any form of government, including communism, is better than total anarchy, when everyone does what he/she wants to do without any regard for others. We seem to be living in times like this as the Scriptures predicted (Read 1 Timothy 4; 2 Timothy 3.)

Since the beginning of time, God has had rules to regulate mankind. Through a careful study of the Bible, using the normal rules of interpretation, we discover that there have been six periods of time called “Dispensations” and one yet to come in the future. Each period of time has different rules for different people. But they all end up in failure because man has a corrupted, sinful nature (disposition) that we all inherited from our first parents (1 John 1:8; Psalm 51:5). We’ll have one as long as we live. Christians are given a new nature from above (2 Peter 1:4) when we place our faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ alone, Who died for our sins…and rose again bodily on the third day (Acts 16:31; 1 Corinthians 15:3, 4)

Right after Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit and were expelled from the Garden of Eden, they and their descendants lived according to their consciences. This lasted for about 1,600 years and ended up in total disaster and the need for God to bring in a universal flood to wipe out all mankind, who apparently had been genetically modified (GMO), with the exception of Noah and his family (See Genesis 6-8; Jude 1:6).

Later, after a couple more “Dispensations” had failed, God gave to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob the Mosaic Law that lasted for about 1,500 years. They had strict dietary laws, ceremonial, and civil laws to regulate their lives. They had a special priesthood that acted as a bridge between God and the Jews. They were given many promises, including a Messiah to deliver them from their bondage to other nations and from their sins. When the Jews rejected their Messiah (Jesus Christ), God temporarily set the Jews aside, and is currently dealing primarily with another group of people (non-Jews) under “Grace Principles for Living.”
