“Coming Attractions”

Posted: May 14, 2021 in Uncategorized

Whether you go to the movies or watch television, there usually are previews of coming attractions. Commercials are designed to entice you to become a “regular, repeat customer” of their products and/or services. Of course, there is a charge/fee that is associated with these things.

Enticement. Samples of perfumes, hand cream, food, pain killers, drugs, and many other things are shown or distributed to customers with the hope that they will want more of the same. Wise King Solomon wrote: “Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant, But [the simple one] knows not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell” (Proverbs 9:17, 18). He wanted “To deliver [his son] from the immoral woman, from the seductress who flatters with her words” (Proverbs 2:16). Do you know anyone (whether a man or a woman) who uses flattery for personal gain? Do you use it yourself sometimes (Psalm 5:9)?

Zest For Living. It comes from being able to anticipate something good in the future. Keep this in mind: The believer’s future is as bright as the promises of God. Many people are depressed because they don’t know (1) where they came from, (2) why they are here on earth, and (3) where they will go when they die. Is this a problem that you have? God’s Word has answers to these questions.

Banish Boredom. One of the main reasons heaven will never get boring is because God will keep on revealing new truths about Himself to the believers who will spend eternity with Him (Ephesians 2:7). We will never become gods, as some cults teach, but Christians will get new bodies like Christ’s resurrected, glorified humanity with a garment of light (1 John 3:2; See Luke 24:36-43; 1 Timothy 6:16). We won’t be taking our earthly wardrobes with us to heaven.

Contrasts. With the temporal, earthly bodies that we now have, consisting of flesh, bones, and blood, we’re not able to fully appreciate what God has in store for those of us who are a part of His “Forever Family” – whether one is an Old Testament believer or a New Testament believer. (Don’t confuse the two groups. God doesn’t.) Our glorified bodies, like Christ’s glorified body, will have flesh and bones, but no blood (See 1 Corinthians 15:49, 50; Hebrews 9:12). We’ll be able to travel at the speed of thought like Christ can (John 20:17). Unlike the devil, who is a liar (John 8:44), God never lies or deceives us (Titus 1:2; 17:17). Truth is one of His Divine attributes (John 14:6).

Inheritance. Not all believers will inherit the same things or receive the same rewards (Daniel 12:1-3; 1 Corinthians 3:11-15). The Jewish believers who live on the renovated earth (Isaiah 35:1 ff; 40:4) during the millennium will possess all the land from the Mediterranean Sea to the Euphrates River as God promised (Genesis 15:18-21). When the Millennium is over, God will destroy the present heavens and earth, which has been polluted by sin and which has a curse on it (Genesis 3:17; Romans 8:22, 23). Then He will create a New Heavens and a New Earth, and the Jewish believers will inherit a new world where righteousness will finally settle down and feel at home (Romans 4:13; 2 Peter 3:10-13).

The Bride. Christians, who make up the spiritual “Body of Christ” will become the “Bride of Christ.” We will reside with Him in the heavenly New Jerusalem (John 14:1-3; Philippians 3:20; Revelation 21:9 ff), and go with Him wherever He goes (John 14:1-3). Where will you spend eternity? It all depends on what you do with the Lord Jesus Christ. Consider the following information –

Bad News. [2] All of us start our physical lives as children of the Devil (John 8:44; 1 John 3:9, 10). (Consider the secular assessment of the Minnesota Crime Commission about all babies. They are savages.) [1] This is why we must be “born again from above” (John 3:3-7). All those who die physically in unbelief will spend eternity with the devil and his angels/demons in the Lake of Fire (Matthew 25:30, 41, 46; Mark 9:44, 46, 48; John 16:11). There will be no manifestations of the life of God in that awful place. Some of them will suffer more than others (Revelation 20:11-15; Matthew 10:15; 11:22).

Good News. You don’t have to go this frightening place if you’ll simply put your faith and trust in the Christ of the Scriptures alone, Who died for your sins…and rose again bodily on the third day (Acts 16:31; 1 Corinthians 15:3, 4). We’re not saved by our good works, or by our faith plus our good works (Ephesians 2:8, 9; Titus 3:5). Have you been saved by God’s grace through faith in Christ yet? If not, why not trust Him right now as your personal Savior?

Growth. Once you’ve been “born again from above” into God’s family, spiritual growth is made possible through the intake of the milk of the word and then stronger food (1 Peter 2:2; 2 Peter 3:18). We are here to help those who are teachable and willing to change (2 Timothy 2:2, 15; 3:16, 17).

Don’t Follow Them. [The] false teachers are like “… wells without water, clouds carried by a tempest, for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever” (2 Peter 2:7). “For when [the false teachers] speak great swelling words of emptiness, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through lewdness, the ones who have actually escaped from those who live in error. While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage. For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning. For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them. But it has happened to them according to the true proverb: ‘A dog returns to his own vomit,’ and, ‘a sow, having washed, to her wallowing in the mire’” (2 Peter 2:17-22).
