“The Little Leaguer’s Prayer”

Posted: July 27, 2022 in Evagelism, Gospel

“Lord, give me the strength to hit the ball,

And if I do, don’t let me fall.

Help me to pick the pitch that’s right

And let me knock it out of sight.

Help me to run with deer-like grace,

Don’t let me miss, but tag first base.

Then on to second, stay with me, Lord,

‘Cause this one out, we can’t afford.

Help me to zoom like a flying bird

Around second base and on to third.

Then let me slide with feet outthrust

Across home plate in swirling dust.

But first of all, dear Lord, I pray,

Just tell the coach to let me play!” [1]

“The missional commission for believers, and therefore for the church, is stated in Acts 1:8. We are to be witnesses for Jesus with an “Onward till Upward” partnership with Him. The problem is that too many believers find themselves sitting on the bench of commission inactivity. We have a tendency to pray about our participation—like the little leaguer prayed about his—but not get off the bench to be active witnesses for Christ. Fulfilling this mandate is accomplished when believers individually and collectively impact the lives of unsaved people with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

“I have been told that only about 14 percent of Christians ever witness, and only 1 percent have ever led someone to Christ outside of their immediate family. “The Great Commission has become the great omission of the church.” But this is solvable! We have a Coach who not only desires our participation, but who has strongly commanded our personal involvement in His commission mandate as recorded in Matthew 28:18–20.

“Jesus is so willing to involve us as His witnesses that He has given to us the Holy Spirit Who functions a lot like an Assistant Coach. He provides all the training resources to empower every believer to be an effective witness. Jesus’ goal is to use us on the playing field of life as active players rather than having to spend time trying to coax us off the bench (John 4:35–38).

“Jesus has also revealed the entire scope of the season’s schedule. The mission of each church and for each believer extends from the hometown playing field to neighboring fields of regional settings, national venues, and international impact. This plan has been likened to a person casting a stone into pond of water and watching the ripples spread out from the initial point of impact to all of the shorelines.

“Our new life in Christ first shines in our immediate circle of family and friends. It is sup-posed to shine with a saving influence toward our unsaved neighbors and contacts in this world (Matt. 5:16). Ultimately our testimony widens further through our local church ministries of outreach and then to mission and missionary endeavors throughout the world.

“We each must answer the question: Am a bench-sitter, or am I an active player in God’s commission mandate? Each of us should pray, “Dear Coach, I am ready as Your witness, and I want to participate in the Great Commission today.” [2]
