“When we put our trust in the political system to change society, when we become more consumed with winning the elections than winning the lost, when we marry the Gospel with politics, when our Christianity becomes an appendage to a political party, we have confused politics with the Gospel.” – Michael Brown [1]
Prayer. Brown, who voted for Donald Trump in the past two presidential elections, noted that he had never seen so much prayer for a political candidate until the 2020 election. “It wasn’t prayer for revival; it wasn’t prayer for the Great Commission,” he explained. “It was prayer for a candidate to win the elections, a candidate I voted for, but recognizing that only Jesus can save America.” [1]
Warning. “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart departs from the LORD” (Jeremiah 17:5). “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; But we will remember the name of the LORD our God” (Psalm 20:7; See Isaiah 31:1). “Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Let not the mighty man glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory in his riches; But let him who glories glory in this, That he understands and knows Me, That I am the LORD, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight,” says the LORD” (Jeremiah 9:23, 24).
BTW – Our dad had us memorize this and many other verses in English and Japanese during our dinner time when I was growing up in Japan as a “missionary kid.” We’d recite some of them during our street meetings at the Shibuya train station on Sunday afternoons. Man’s Governments. Jesus didn’t try to overthrow the Roman government when He was here on earth the first time, 2,000 years ago. At His trial, when He stood before Pilate, the Roman governor, He said, “My kingdom is not [out] of this world. If My kingdom were [out] of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here” (John 18:36).
Twisted. Some people twist this verse and make it out to be a “spiritual kingdom” rather than a literal “physical kingdom” that was merely postponed until a later date. Why? Because the Jews, as a whole, had rejected Him from being their King and Messiah (John 1:11; 19:6, 15; Matthew 27:25). They wanted a “Political Deliverer” and a “Welfare King” but He turned them down (John 6:15). God the Father, not the people, will set Jesus up as King (Psalm 2).
Plan. Toward the end of His earthly ministry, a major shift in His focus took place from that of His becoming Israel’s King, to His offering of Himself as the Savior of the world, not just for the Jews, but also for the non-Jews (Matthew 16:20-23). Today, Jews and non-Jews are saved the same way – by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ through the message of the Gospel that He died for our sins…and rose again bodily on the third day (Romans 1:16; 1 Corinthians 15:3, 4).
Mystery Revealed. Daniel the Prophet accurately conveyed to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon what world kingdoms would follow his kingdom which was represented by a head of gold (See Daniel 2:31-45; 7:1-28). After the men of this present world system, which is governed by Satan himself (Ephesians 2:2; John 16:11), have utterly failed in their efforts to bring in world peace, without the “Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6), the Lord Jesus Christ will return to this earth and crush all of man’s wicked kingdoms and set up His own Kingdom for 1,000 years before eternity future begins (2 Peter 3:10-13; Revelation 21:1 ff). Yes, it will be a literal, physical kingdom on/over the earth where Jesus Christ will be the King of kings, and Lord of lords (1 Timothy 6:15; Revelation 17:14; 19:16).
Time Frame. Christ will be ruling over His millennial Kingdom shortly after the “Seven Years of Tribulation” are over (Revelation 6-19). We believe that the stage for this event to take place is almost complete. The major players are getting into their positions. But before the “Seven Year Tribulation” occurs, the Church, which is made up of true believers from the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2) until the Rapture of the Church, must and will be removed from earth (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18). [3]
Members Only. Those who have placed their faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ alone, as the One Who died for their sins…and rose again bodily from the dead, will be the members of this group, “The True Church, The Spiritual Body of Christ” (Acts 16:31; 1 Corinthians 15:3, 4). These people become “The Spiritual Bride of Christ” (Ephesians 5:32; Revelation 21:9; 22:17). Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). The Apostle Peter said, “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).
Gospel. While many “preachers” talk about the Gospel, few of them ever spell it out clearly to their listeners. What have you heard in churches or on the radio or TV? Far too many preachers leave out Christ’s bodily resurrection from the dead. A dead Christ can’t help anyone. “No Resurrection = No Gospel.” Is it any wonder that so many people are confused and unsure of their salvation? What about you? [4]
Limited Atonement. There are those who believe that Christ only died for the “elect.” This is why they cannot honestly tell an unsaved person, “Christ died for your sins…and rose again bodily from the dead.”
Problems. Instead they are forced to say things like this: “Perhaps Christ died for you.” “Maybe God so loved you.” “Christ shed His blood for you, perhaps.” “Salvation has been provided for you, maybe.” “Possibly God commends His love toward you.” “Hopefully He’s the propitiation for your sins.” “There is a possibility that Christ died as your Substitute.” “I bring you good news, maybe.” “It’s possible that Christ died for you. If you get saved then we know that He did die for you, but if you continue to reject Him then He did not die for you.” “Christ died for you only if you believe that Christ died for you (thus proving you are elect), but if you do not believe this and if you continue in your unbelief until the day you die, then Christ did not die for you.” [5] Sound confusing to you?
The Scriptures Are Clear – And He [Jesus] Himself is the propitiation [satisfaction] for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world. (1 John 2:2). “For to this end we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe” (1 Timothy 4:10). “But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction” (2 Peter 2:1).
Questions. Are you relying on a mere man to “Make America Great Again?” Has God given up on the U.S. for our sins (See Romans 1:18-32)? I hope not. Let’s get a little more personal. Are you sure of your own salvation? Why should God let you into His heaven? If you believe you’re saved, is there anything you could do or fail to do that would cause you to lose your salvation? If so, what? If you’re saved, are you more concerned about politics than with sharing the clear Gospel with lost people? Do you love Christ’s imminent return and does your life reflect this? Will you earn the “Crown of Righteousness” (2 Timothy 4:8)?
