Prior to his becoming a true believer in the God of the Jews, King Nebuchadnezzar ruled over the whold world as “The Head of God” and as a very cruel dictator. God used him to punish the wicked Jews by taking them into captivity in Babylon for 70 years (Daniel 1:1, 2; 2:38; Jeremiah 29:10).
After being humbled by God for seven years, and living like a beast of the field, and then having his kingdom restored to him, he shared his personal testimony for all the world to read. It’s recorded for us in Daniel chapter 4. He came to realize that “the Most High [God] rules in the kingdom of men, [and that He] gives it to whomever He will, and sets over it the lowest of men” (Daniel 4:17, 25).
It is God Himself Who “changes the times and the seasons; [Who] removes kings and raises up kings; [Who] gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding” (Daniel 2:21).
We also know that it is God Who “has made from one blood [i.e. Adam] every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and [He] has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings” (Acts 17:26). (See “Evolution vs God.” Click below.)
Behind most of the rulers of this earth there is a fallen angel / demon who is in controll of that person even without that person’s knowing it (Daniel 10:20; Ephesians 2:2; 6:12). They don’t have your best interest in mind. But Christians are to pray for them, and we can also intercede against them (1 Timothy 2:1-4; Romans 11:2).
Apparently after sufffering from years of painful tuberculosis and eventually losing his leg to the disease, Poet William E. Henley foolishly said, “I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.” He knows better now where he is.
All of us are either controlled by the devil / demons (John 8:44; 13:2; Acts 10:38), by our own sinful nature (Romans 6:11-14; Galatians 5:16), or by the Lord (Ephesians 5:18).
Author Warren Wiersbe wrote, “I would rather have Jesus Christ as my Master than anyone else I know [Romans 12:1, 2; 1 Peter 3:15]. He loves me [ John 13:34, 35], He knows all about me [John 2:24, 25], He made me [Psalm 139:15], He knows the future [Isaiah 46:10], and He gives me the power I need to serve Him acceptably and fruitfully [Philippians 4:13; Ephesian 3:20]. When I fail, [The Father] forgives me [when I confess my sins to Him – 1 John 1:9] and helps me start over again [Luke 22:32]. He never leaves me or forsakes me [Hebrews 13:5], and He rewards me graciously [1 Corinthians 3:8, 14; 2 Corinthians 5:10], though I don’t deserve it [Revelation 4:11; 5:9]. Could you find a better Master than that?” [I couldn’t.] – Warren W. Wiersbe, On Being A Servant, p. 30.
Songwriter Oscar C. A. Bernadotte expressed the longing of his heart with these words –
I’d rather have Jesus than silver or gold;
I’d rather be His than have riches untold;
I’d rather have Jesus than houses or lands;
I’d rather be led by His nail-pierced hand
Refrain:
Than to be the king of a vast domain
Or be held in sin’s dread sway;
I’d rather have Jesus than anything
This world affords today.
What about you? Are you tired of making a mess out of your life? Have you placed your faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ alone, Who died for your sins…and rose again bodily on the third day? If not, why not now? Are you depending on some or all of your good works to be saved? (If you are, Stop! Read Ephesians 2:8, 9; Titus 3:5)
Once you’ve been saved, and in light of the mercies of God, He wants /desires that all believers “present [their] bodies as a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is [our] reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world [age], but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:1, 2).
God has some wonderful things He’d like to accomplish in and through His children for God’s glory and the good of others (Ephesians 2:10; 1 Peter 4:10).
